entropy

/ˈɛn.trə.pi/ · AmE often /ˈen.trə.pi/

A thermodynamic measure of transformation, named in 1865. Not a synonym of chaos.

English entropy is young as a scientific name and older as a Greek-shaped coinage. In 1865 Rudolf Clausius coined German Entropie for what he had been calling the transformational content of a body, on deliberate analogy with Energie, from Greek en, ‘in,’ and tropē, ‘a turning, a transformation,’ from PIE *trep-, ‘to turn.’ English entropy is attested from 1868. A first English print in 1867 is also reported. The physics sense is primary. Shannon borrows the name in 1948 for a quantity in information theory. A later figurative sense of disorder is thinner, and it is not this plate’s definition. Full reduction of ENTROPY is 41. Ordinal is 113. Reverse ordinal is 76. Reverse reduction is 31. All misses on the noun. Methods named. Found observations, after the language. Not historically intended in the 1865 coinage. The door phrase Entropy and love full-reduces to 69. That hit belongs to the phrase, not to the noun.

Morphology German Entropie was coined in 1865 by Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888), on analogy with Energie, for the quantity S. He had been calling it transformational content, Verwandlungsinhalt. Established for the coinage. The Greek parts are en, ‘in,’ and τροπή, ‘a turning, a transformation,’ from PIE *trep-, ‘to turn.’ Clausius’s naming note uses ἡ τροπή for the transformation. Etymonline glosses Greek entropia as ‘a turning toward.’ That is a morphological claim. It is not an ancient Greek laboratory term for thermodynamic entropy. English entropy is the 1868 loan in Etymonline. Wiktionary dates a first English print to 1867. The year of first English print is probable. The German coinage in 1865 is established. The adjective entropic is the related English form. Enthalpy, 1927, is a different coinage, from Greek enthalpein, ‘to warm in.’

  1. Proto-Indo-European
    the turning root
    Established

    *trep-1,2

To turn. The root of tropē. Established as Etymonline’s reconstruction for this family. Not a proof that ancient speakers had a science of entropy.

  2. Ancient Greek
    the noun Clausius names
    Established

    τροπή1

A turning. A transformation. Clausius’s note uses ἡ τροπή for the transformation. Morphological source of the coinage. Not an ancient thermodynamic term.

  3. German
    the analogy
    Established

    Energie1

The word Clausius deliberately rhymed. Entropie is shaped like Energie. The rhyme is a naming choice, not a shared formula.

  4. German
    1865
    Established

    Entropie1,7

Clausius’s coinage for S, formerly the transformational content of a body. The physics sense starts here.

  5. English
    1868, and perhaps 1867
    Probable

    entropy1,4

The English loan of the German scientific term. Etymonline 1868. Wiktionary’s first print 1867. The year is probable. The loan is not.

  6. English
    1948, a fork
    Established

    entropy5

Shannon’s information measure, borrowed by formal analogy. A dated extension of the name. The thermodynamic sense remains primary.

Senses through time

  1. 1865

Clausius names S entropy, in German Entropie. The energy of the universe is constant. The entropy of the universe tends toward a maximum. The sense is transformation content, a thermodynamic measure tied to the second law. It is not a slogan of chaos.1,7

    Established

  2. Statistical reading

Entropy as a count of the microscopic arrangements consistent with a macrostate, written S = k log W. This is the statistical reading of the same thermodynamic quantity, after Boltzmann. This plate does not date a first paper for that formula.7

    Probable

  3. 1867 / 1868

The German scientific term enters English. Etymonline gives 1868. Wiktionary gives 1867 as the first English print of the loan. The loan is established. The first-print year is the variance, and it is probable.1,4

    Probable

  4. 1948

Claude Shannon, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, names H = −Σ pᵢ log pᵢ the entropy of a set of probabilities, by formal analogy with statistical mechanics. An information-theory fork. It does not erase the thermodynamic sense.5

    Established

  5. A naming story

A later story says John von Neumann told Shannon to call the information quantity entropy. That story is disputed. Shannon told Robert Price in 1984 that he did not get the word from von Neumann, and that he had already used entropy in a 1945 cryptography memorandum. This plate prefers Shannon’s own adoption of the thermodynamic name. The anecdote is not printed here as fact.6

    Disputed

  6. Later

A secondary, figurative use for disorder, uncertainty, or decay in open prose. Keep it secondary. Do not flatten the word to chaos, and do not collapse it into enthalpy.1

    Established

Semantic change

  • transformation content

    1865, then later open prose

    a slogan of disorder

The coinage keeps a thermodynamic measure of transformation. Disorder, uncertainty, and decay are a later and thinner use. Established1

  • a thermodynamic quantity

    1948

    an information measure

Shannon borrows the name by formal analogy with statistical mechanics. The fork does not replace Clausius. Established5

Entropy and Love · · Primary source7,8,9

Live door Entropy and Love. The hero line is ‘One light left on.’ The door also carries S = k log W, and a cipher note that entropy counted and reduced meets 41, not the same sentence, while the letters of Entropy and love meet 69. The door keeps an Asimov room and an Adams room. Those rooms are not the etymology of this noun, and they are not copied. Neighbor plates hold memory, knowledge, civilization, and consciousness, and also psyche, understand, meaning, love, and question. Mnemosyne’s home says physical entropy is not forgetting, and a memory is not a thermodynamic quantity. That is a Field hinge, not an etymology. The Index object second-law-entropy is live: Entropy, ΔS ≥ 0, with Landauer named, and the object says entropy is not 42. There is no entropy-42 object. Checked 16 October 2026. This plate does not invent one.

InterpretationA constellation of the second law and of a journey. LEXIS owns where the English noun came from. The 69 belongs to the door’s phrase, not to Clausius’s coinage.

German Entropie coined 1865 by Rudolf Clausius on analogy of Energie, from Greek en plus tropē, a turning or a transformation, from PIE *trep-, to turn.
